Comparing Apples to Apples: Apple's Lawsuit Against Samsung’s Patent Infringement: Part 2

In our previous blog, part one, we discussed the original lawsuit which was launched by Apple against Samsung in 2011. Typically, patent lawyers gather as much evidence as they can with regards to the date a patent was filed, published and issued, while also constructing a timeline of damages to help their clients.

With regards to the case, after seven years battling in court, a US Jury ruled that Samsung owed Apple a total of $539 million due to patent infringement. Patent and Trademark infringement can be expected in every sector and is not just limited to the phone industry; however, there has been a lot of interest in this case given the substantial damages amount and length of the case. Samsung had launched its own patent infringement against Huawei, the China smartphone manufacturer. The case revolved around violation with regards to the user interface which included the arrangement of the incomes and the design of the widgets. Samsung ultimately lost this dispute against the manufacturing giant.

It is noted that Huawei had filed the highest numbers of patents with the European Patent Office, submitting more than 2,398 applications in 2017. The total numbers of patent applications filed in 2017 with the European Patent Office were 166,000, which also served as an all-time high. Furthermore, there were 48,758 patents filed outside of China by Huawei, and 64,091 patents filed within China.
